The Problem
New Zealand is home to several spider species that cause concern, particularly the white-tail spider whose bite can cause pain, swelling, and in rare cases, skin ulceration. Black tunnelweb spiders, redbacks (in some regions), and large orbweb spiders also alarm homeowners. Spider activity peaks in spring and summer (October to March) as they become more active and visible.
Signs of Infestation
- Webs in corners, window frames, and sheltered areas
- Spider sightings inside the home, especially at night
- White-tail spiders found in clothing, bedding, or towels
- Large numbers of insects attracting spiders indoors
- Egg sacs attached to surfaces or inside stored items
